- The Ayiramthengu brackish water farm was established as ‘Estuarine Research Station’ during 1962, the first one in India in this kind and ceased its function temporarily during 1979. Now it is renovated during 2014 under RKVY project. The farm is located in Alappad village of Karunagapally Taluk in Kollam District. The water source for the farm is the Kayamkulam brackish water system. There is a training block with capacity for conducting residential training to 30 personnel at a time
- The Farm has a total area of 21 ha with 10.52 ha water spread area. It has four large ponds of 2 ha each numbered G1, G2, G3 & G4 and twelve small ponds of 0.2 ha area each numbered N1 to N12 on eastern side and one 1.3 ha pond on the western side of the national water ways. There is 6.78 ha mangrove area and producing mangrove saplings for various environmental protection programme
- The farm is a demonstration farm for new aquaculture initiates and developed technologies for the cage farming of pompano, pearlspot and seabass in Kerala conditions. It has also involved in the farming vannamei shrimp, milkfish and grey-mullet in ponds. There is also demonstration farming on pen culture, RAS and bio-floc unit
- Seed production of pearlspot and nursery rearing of grey-mullet and milkfish is practicing there mainly to cater the needs of farmers of the southern districts
- It is proposed to produce 10.8 lakh number of seed and 58.5 ton of fish worth Rs.353.22 lakh during next season. Three technical staff, three ministerial staff and ten labours are working in the farm
